ATHENS, Ga. — The 20th-ranked Georgia Bulldog men's tennis team fell to No. 12 Mississippi State, 4-0, Friday night at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.
"It was a disappointing match today," Georgia head coach Manuel Diaz said. "Mississippi State was more determined, more aggressive, and they made better decisions. There are no excuses for us. We are fighting a few injuries, but we can't have excuses and feel sorry for ourselves. We will get to work tomorrow and come back ready for Auburn on Sunday."
Georgia (9-8, 2-6) faced three top-ranked pairs in doubles play. On court two, the duo of redshirt sophomore Alex Phillips and junior Jan Zielinski fell to No. 30 Niclas Braun and Giovanni Oradini, 6-3, leaving the point up to courts one and three.
No. 65 Trevor Foshey and Florian Broska clinched the first point for Mississippi State (13-1, 7-0) with a win over redshirt freshman Alex Diaz and junior Emil Reinberg, 6-4. On court one, sophomore Nathan Ponwith and senior Wayne Montgomery won three consecutive games to knot the match at five when doubles play completed.
Mississippi State opened singles play with two back-to-back victories. On court two, No. 55 Reinberg fell to No. 13 Oradini. Shortly after, No. 3 Borges defeated No. 15 Montgomery, 6-2, 6-2 on the first court.
Trailing 3-0, Georgia battled on the bottom four courts. Zielinski dropped his first set in a tiebreaker but came back in the second set to lead 4-2 when play ended. Diaz also fought on the fifth court, winning his first set in a tiebreaker and maintaining an edge on Broska before match was finalized.
Foshey secured the Mississippi State win by defeating Phillips on court six, 7-5, 6-1.
SEC play continues this weekend as Georgia faces Auburn on Sunday, April 1, at 1 p.m. at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex. Admission is free.
