Bulldogs Cruise Into Second Round At ITA Fall Nationals

November 07, 2018 | Women's Tennis

SURPRISE, ARIZ.-----Georgia junior Marta Gonzalez notched one of the biggest wins of her career as she was one of two Bulldogs to cruise into the second round of the Oracle ITA National Championships here Wednesday.

Gonzalez, ranked No. 76, upset Stanford's 13th-ranked Melissa Lord 6-4,6-2. She has beaten five players inside the top 40 this fall and improved to 13-2 this year. Last season, the highest ranked win for Gonzalez came against a player ranked No. 41. Lord clinched Stanford's 2018 NCAA team title last May. Up next, Gonzalez will face Kansas' Nina Khmelnitckaia on Thursday. She is ranked No. 92 and outlasted her first round foe, Tea Jandric (Ole Miss), in three sets.

Meanwhile, Bulldog sophomore Katarina Jokic posted a straight-set win in her first match to advance to the round of 32. Jokic, who is ranked No. 8, dispatched Georgia Gwinnett sophomore Madeline Bosniak 6-1,6-1. Bosniak was coming off winning the NAIA singles title at the ITA Oracle Cup. Jokic's fall record is 5-1. On Thursday, Jokic will battle Livia Kraus (Baylor). She is ranked No. 99 and won in straight sets Wednesday.

"Today was a fantastic start to the week for us," said Georgia associate head coach Drake Bernstein. "Both Katarina and Marta let their strengths show today both physically and mentally. Thursday will be more high-level competition, and we know that it will call for our best. I believe both Marta and Katarina are in a great place right now. We're looking forward to getting out there again."

In its second year, having replaced the ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships, the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships is the lone event on the collegiate tennis calendar to feature competitors from all five divisions (NCAA Divisions I, II and III, NAIA and JUCO) playing in the same tournament. The winner of the 64-player singles draw will receive a main draw wildcard into a 2019 Oracle Challenger Series tournament.

The 2018 Oracle ITA National Fall Championships women's and men's singles finals will stream live on ESPN3 and the ESPN App on Sunday, Nov. 11th, beginning at 1 p.m. EDT, with the women's final. The singles championships will re-air on ESPNU on Tuesday, Nov. 13th, at 3 p.m. EDT.

Draws, schedule of play, daily recaps and a photo gallery can be found on the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships event page . Live scoring via Tennis Ticker will be available, while TempuZ will provide live streaming coverage from two courts at the Surprise Tennis & Racquet Complex. Links to both live scoring and streaming are also available on the event page.
