ATHENS. Ga. — The 2018 Bulldog Classic came to a close Sunday at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex with Georgia women's tennis team locking down five singles and two doubles victories.
In a sophomore showdown, Georgia's Vivian Wolff surged back in both sets to defeat Chandler Carter (Wake Forrest) 6-4, 7-5. Down 2-4 in her first set, Wolff shelled out six games in a row to go up 6-4. She then made another comeback in the second set, down 4-5 before sealing her third win of the tournament. Wolff improves her record to 8-2 on the season.
The match between Georgia sophomore Annette Goulak and MC Meredith from Wake Forrest came down to a second-set tiebreaker, with Goulak coming out on top 6-4, 7-6 (3). This win was Goulak's second of the tournament.
Freshman Lourdes Carle, ranked fourth in ITA freshman/newcomer singles rankings, withstood senior opponent Ann Ulayashchenko (Wake Forrest) to win 6-4, 7-5. Carle finished the match on serve in the second set, clinching a point when her opponent's shot landed long.
"Every day is a new day, and you've just got to go out with new energy and just fight," Georgia head coach Jeff Wallace said. "Today was our last fall tournament with the whole team and I thought we played well collectively and have grown in many different areas. I thought the chemistry was really good, and they did a lot of good stuff out there."
Both junior Elena Christofi and 77th-ranked sophomore Morgan Coppoc sealed third-set victories against Wake Forrest opponents. In the second set of Christofi's match against Peyton Pesavento, she went up 7-5 to push the match into a third set. Christofi came back from a 3-4 deficit in the third set and won two straight games to take a 5-4 lead, eventually sealing the 3-6, 7-6 (2), 6-4 win over her freshman opponent. Also in the third set, Coppoc secured her victory over junior Alexis Franco by a score of 6-2, 6-7, 6-3.
Earlier in doubles, the Georgia duo of Carle and Wolff defeated the No. 30-ranked team of Sasha Belaya and Daniela Pedraza Novak (Illinois) by a score of 6-1. The victory represents the pair's first win against a ranked opponent and improves the duo's record to 2-0 for the fall campaign.
Goulak and freshman Alee Clayton recorded a 6-4 win over Illinois' sophomore Emilee Duong and senior Jaclyn Switkes. After entering the Bulldog Classic with a 1-0 record, the Georgia tandem sealed two doubles victories in two days to bump its fall season record to 3-0 .
The Bulldog Classic completes the majority of the Bulldogs' fall action. Marta Gonzalez and Katarina Jokic will compete in the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships in Surprise, Ariz., starting Wednesday, Nov. 7.
