Four Singles Wins Highlight Day Two of Bulldog Classic

November 03, 2018 | Women's Tennis

ATHENS, Ga.— Day two of the Bulldog Classic featured four singles victories and a doubles win for the Georgia women's tennis team at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex on Saturday.

Georgia sophomore Katarina Jokic, ranked eighth in ITA singles, competed in the day's highest-ranked singles match against No. 30-ranked Christina Rosca, a junior from Vanderbilt (VU). Jokic maintained control the entire match and defeated Rosca handedly with a score of 6-2, 6-1.

The last two matches of the day spilled into a third set with the Bulldogs coming out on top in both. First, Georgia's 76th-ranked junior Marta Gonzalez won her first set against Vanderbilt senior Emily Smith but lost the second, then broke Smith's serve in the third to win 6-3, 6-7 (4), 6-1. Next, sophomore Vivian Wolff outlasted 79th-ranked Amanda Meyer (VU) came in the third-set tiebreaker with a final score of 6-2, 2-6, 7-6 (4). The victory moves Gonzalez to 12-2 on the season, while Wolff upped her record to 7-2 overall and notched her second ranked win.

In a matchup of juniors, the Bulldogs' Elena Christofi fought off Emma Kurtz's attempt to push the match to three sets by winning the second set to defeat the Vanderbilt player 6-1, 7-5.

"I thought that on doubles we have a lot of work we need to do there," Georgia head coach Jeff Wallace said. "We did not get off to good starts at all. I think we got competitive, but in these six and eight pro-game sets you have to get off to great starts, and that is obviously what we are going to be working on tomorrow. I think our singles were great today and that all of our players looked good, and it was great getting four in the top six courts and great tennis."

Earlier in the day, Georgia took one of four doubles matches against a group of Wake Forrest teams. The Georgia duo of sophomore Annette Goulak and freshman Alee Clayton secured an 8-4 win to oust Wake Forrest's pair of senior Joanna Zalewski and junior Alexis Franco. The tandem of Goulak and Clayton improved to 2-0 on the season. Freshman Meg Kowalski returned to the court after missing some time due to injury, but fell in her doubles match with Christofi to WF's Anna Ulyashchenko and Saby Nihalani, 8-3.

Georgia freshman Lourdes Carle, ranked fourth in ITA freshman/newcomers rankings, battled the stiffest singles opponent of the day in seventh-ranked senior Fernanda Contreras (VU). After getting into a 0-5 hole to start the first set, Carle surged back to force a first set tiebreaker, but lost and the veteran Commodore held on in the second set to win 7-6, 6-2.

The final day of the Bulldog Classic begins Sunday at 8 a.m. and will open with doubles, followed by singles. Admission is free. The matches will be on both outside courts, the Henry Field Stadium Courts and the McWhorter Courts, barring weather.
