Drop Takes 77th At NCAA Cross Country Championships

MADISON, WIS. --- Georgia junior Jessica Drop competed at her second consecutive NCAA Cross Country Championships and was 77that the Thomas Zimmer Course in Madison, Wis., on Saturday.

With snow on the ground and temperatures hovering in the low 30s, Drop, a native of Durham, Conn., crossed the finish line in 20:56.4 in the 255-woman field.  She was the only Georgia runner on the men and women's teams to advance to this year's Nationals.

This marked Drop's fourth straight NCAA Championships counting the 2017 cross and 2018 indoor and outdoor track seasons.  She was an All-American at all three of those meets. Â

On Saturday, Colorado senior Dani Jones was the outright winner after clocking a 19:42.8 on the 6k course.  Colorado (65) ran away with the women's title and New Mexico (103), Oregon (160), Michigan (213) and Stanford (232) rounded out the top five, respectively. Â

For the men, Wisconsin senior Morgan McDonald won the 10k race with a 29:08.3, edging Stanford senior Grant Fisher (29:08.8).  Northern Arizona (83), BYU (116), Portland (160), Colorado (178) and Stanford (201) comprised the top five in the team race in that order.

This marked the second time that Drop ran on this course this season.  On Oct. 13, Drop joined her teammates at the Pre Nationals meet and was the top Georgia finisher, taking 11thin 20:22.6. Â

Last year at the NCAA Championships in Louisville, Ky., the Lady Bulldogs were 17thin the team race as Jessica and her sister Samantha finished as All-Americans. Jessica was 31stand was one spot behind her twin sister Samantha Drop, who redshirted this fall. In 2017, the Drops became the only set of twins to ever earn cross country All-America honors in the same season running on the same squad.

The Bulldogs open their 2018-19 indoor campaign at the Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener in Boston, Mass., on Dec. 1.  The next meet is the UAB Blazer Invitational at the site of the 2019 NCAA Indoor Championships in Birmingham, Ala., on Jan. 11-12.
