Carle Acing Doubles Duty at Youth Olympics
BUENOS AIRES, Argentina – Lourdes Carle tallied wins in both the women's and mixed doubles draw Tuesday to continue competition in the 2018 Youth Olympic Games for her home country and host Argentina.
The women's doubles quarterfinals started the day's action for the Georgia women's tennis freshman. Carle and Columbian teammate Maria Camila Osorio Serrano edged the Russian duo of Kamilla Rakhimova and Oksana Selekhmeteva, 7-5, 3-6, 1-0 (10-7). The win marks their second in the 16-team field, advancing them to the semifinals.
Already warmed up, Carle joined the court with fellow Argentinean Sebastian Baez for their first round match in the mixed doubles field of 64 teams. The native tandem swept Sylvie Zund (Liechtenstein) and Nicolas Alvarez Varona (Spain) in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2.
Next, Carle and Osorio Serrano face the twosome of Kaja Juvan (Slovenia) and Iga Swiatek (Poland) after the other semifinal match which starts Wednesday at 10 a.m. GMT-3 / 9 a.m. ET. Meanwhile, Carle and Baez go on to play France's Clara Burel and Gaston Hugo in the round of 32 Thursday at approx. 10 p.m. GMT-3 / 9 a.m. ET.
Each tennis player competes in a 32-player singles bracket, a 16-team doubles field and a 64-team mixed doubles tournament.
The Youth Olympic Games are an elite sporting event for young people from all over the world aged from 15 to 18. The Summer Youth Olympic Games feature over 3,500 athletes and are held over a 12-day period. The first summer edition was held in Singapore from August 14-26 in 2010.
