Youth Olympics Provides a Homecoming for Lourdes Carle
BUENOS AIRES, Argentina – While thousands of Georgia fans flocked to Athens for Homecoming this past weekend, Georgia women's tennis freshman Lourdes Carle made her own trip home to compete for Argentina on the world stage, the 2018 Youth Olympic Games.
The Argentinean grew up in the rural town of Daireaux located approximately five hours from the Nation's capital, Buenos Aires, and home of the third-ever Summer Youth Olympics. The Games commenced with an opening ceremony on Saturday, while competition in 23 of the 37 sports began Sunday including tennis.
Each tennis player competes in a 32-player singles bracket, a 16-team doubles field and a 64-team mixed doubles tournament.
Carle made her way onto the court first on Sunday in doubles. Pairing with Maria Camila Osorio Serrano of Columbia, the duo defeated Sada Nahimana (Burundi) and Maria Gabriela Rivera Corado (Guatemala), 6-4, 6-4. Next, the South American tandem face Kamilla Rakhimova and Oksana Selekhmeteva of Russia in the quarterfinals Wednesday at approximately 10 a.m. GMT-3/11 a.m. ET.
In the singles draw, Carle fell to her doubles partner, Osorio Serrano, 7-6 (4), 7-5, on Monday morning. Carle is set to make her mixed doubles debut with fellow Argentinean Sebastian Baez on Wednesday with a time to be announced.
"It's amazing that she has the opportunity to go back to her home country and play for her home country at this high of a stage," Georgia head coach Jeff Wallace said. "We are very proud of her and happy that she has this experience. There is a lot of great talent in the tournament, but she also is a great talent. When she is playing, she is always in it so we are excited to see how she plays."
The Youth Olympic Games are an elite sporting event for young people from all over the world aged from 15 to 18. The Summer Youth Olympic Games feature over 3,500 athletes and are held over a 12-day period. The first summer edition was held in Singapore from August 14-26 in 2010.
