DUBLIN, Ohio --- The 10th-ranked Georgia men's golf team won a match and was leading another when play was suspended on Monday in the Jack Nicklaus Invitational at Muirfield Village Golf Club.
With darkness already closing in, a lightning delay Monday chased the Bulldogs and seven other squads from the course before the semifinals could be completed.
The semifinals will resume Tuesday with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. There will be no finals due to the teams' travel arrangements. The winners of the Georgia-Clemson and Georgia Tech-South Carolina matches will be crowned as co-champions.
The Bulldogs held a 3-2-1 lead over the Tigers when play was suspended on Monday. Freshman Trent Phillips opened a 2-up advantage through 10 holes, while redshirt junior Tye Waller and freshman Will Kahlstorf (making his collegiate debut) got off to 1-up advantages through nine holes. Junior Spencer Ralston stood all square, also through nine, while junior Will Chandler was down three through nine and sophomore Davis Thompson trailed by three through seven.
In the quarterfinals, the Bulldogs dispatched Florida State 4-2 as Waller, Ralston, Thompson and Kahlstorf posted victories. Waller earned five wins over the first eight holes and wound up with a 4&2 decision over Jake Carter. Ralston held four wins after 11 holes en route to a 3&1 victory over Alberto Martinez. Thompson was all square with Calvin Sierota through 14 holes, but claimed Nos. 6 and 9 (as Georgia closed on the front nine) for the 2-up win. Kahlstorf was knotted with Corey Carlson after 15, then took No. 7 as the difference in the 1-up decision. Phillips dropped a 2&1 decision to John Park, while Chandler fell 4&2 to Jamie Li. Phillips' match was all square through 13 holes with Park winning Nos. 6 and 8, while Chandler's was knotted after 12 before Li rattled off four straight holes.
