Bulldogs’ Runs Ends in Semifinals
ATLANTA – Both the Georgia singles and doubles contingents saw its play end in the semifinals Sunday at the ITA Southeast Regional Championships.
Play started in consolation singles and doubles inside the Ben Myers Tennis Complex due to chilly weather. Afterwards the singles main draw picked back up in the quarterfinals with Georgia junior Marta Gonzalez, a 5-8 seed, amongst the remaining eight players.
First, Gonzalez, ranked No. 76 in ITA singles, defeated top-seeded and nationally ranked 11th Carla Touly (Florida State), 6-3, 7-6 (4) to advance to the semifinals. The win marked Gonzalez's highest-ranked win of her career. Later, the Madrid, Spain product fell to the Florida's McCartney Kessler, ranked 65th and seeded fourth, 6-3, 6-1. The junior Bulldog now has a 10-2 record on the season including a 6-2 slate against ranked opponents.
The main draw doubles followed in the evening with fifth-seeded Gonzalez and Morgan Coppoc in the fold of the semifinals. The Georgia duo lost to No. 6 seed Jarlskog/Dimitrova (Florida), 6-1, 7-5. Gonzalez and the sophomore Coppoc went 3-1 in the tournament.
