CHOUDRANT, La. --- Paced once again by freshman Trent Phillips, the 10th-ranked Georgia men's golf team stood second after two rounds on Monday in the Jim Rivers Intercollegiate at Squire Creek Country Club.
The Bulldogs carded rounds of 10-under 278 and 8-under 280 for a total of 18-under 558 on the par-72, 7,070-yard layout. Georgia is two shots shy of UAB, which landed at 20-under 556. The tournament is a two-team race between UAB and Georgia as the next-closest squad is Cincinnati at 4-over 580.
In his two rounds on Monday, Phillips signed for two eagles (twice conquering the par-5, 528-yard second hole) and seven birdies en route to 4-under 68 loops and a total of 8-under 136. He is just one off the pace set by UAB's William Walker III (9-under 135). Phillips improved to 8-for-8 with rounds in the 60s to begin his collegiate career and he has an average of 67.88. The rookie from Inman, S.C., has recorded or tied for Georgia's low score in six of eight stroke-play rounds this season.
Junior Spencer Ralston and sophomore Davis Thompson followed Phillips at 5-under 139, good enough for fourth individually. Ralston had rounds of 68-71 and Thompson went 72-67. Junior Trevor Phillips, Trent's older brother, had loops of 70-74 for an even-par 144 and 16th place. Redshirt junior Tye Waller finished at 9-over 153 with rounds of 75-78.
Playing as an individual and in the first stroke-play tournament of his collegiate career, freshman Will Kahlstorf opened with a 3-under 69 and added an even-par 72 for a 3-under 141. He is eighth in the standings.
