FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Nine first-place finishes lifted the University of Georgia women's swimming and diving team over the Arkansas Razorbacks, 170-129.5, on Saturday at the Arkansas Natatorium.
"Arkansas was really good today," Tom Cousins Swimming and Diving Head Coach Jack Bauerle said. "It was a hard-fought meet. Arkansas is one of those teams we're going to have to fight and claw for a lot, and that's exactly what we did. We saw some new faces have great races today – Olivia Carter, Callie Dickinson and Dakota Luther. Courtney Harnish had a good day. Jordan Stout is a very different swimmer than she was a year ago; she is going to be helpful wherever we put her. In general, we raced very well. The kids did a great job."
Sophomore Courtney Harnish picked up right where she left off after an All-SEC, All-Freshman 2017-18 season, picking up a pair of freestyle wins for the Lady Bulldogs in Fayetteville. She was joined by freshmen Callie Dickinson and Olivia Carter, who provided two first-place finishes apiece in their collegiate debuts.
Arkansas took the first event in the 200-yard relay, until Harnish used the 1,000-yard freestyle to add nine points to the Bulldog total with a time of 9:52.98. Sophomore Olivia Anderson and freshman Maddie Homovich followed in third (10:0-4.29) and fourth (10:07.74).
Next, junior Jordan Stout and freshman Dakota Luther topped the 200-yard freestyle in order at first (1:48.73) and second (1:50.42).
Then, Dickinson debuted her collegiate 100-yard backstroke time in 55.79, producing a first-place finish for the Lady Bulldogs. Another one-two Lady Bulldog race, this time freshman Olivia Carter and senior Caitlin Casazza, brought Georgia a combined 13 points before the Razorbacks took the top spot in the 50-yard freestyle. Junior Veronica Burchill provided a second-place slot in 23.22.
In the 1-meter springboard, junior McKensi Austin paced the Lady Bulldog divers with a score of 281.90, followed by freshman Ambira D'Alonzo (229.65) and junior Freida Lim (228.83).
The 100-yard freestyle found Burchill with a second-place spot again in a time of 50.73, with sophomores Gabi Fa'amausili and Maddie Wallis in fourth (51.89) and fifth (52.11).
Three Lady Bulldog freshmen finished in order in the 200-yard backstroke: Dickinson (1:58.15), Homovich (1:58.89) and Caroline Aikins (1:59.17).
Sophomore Danielle Della Torre and junior Sofia Carnevale produced second (2:16.49) and third-place (2:18.10) finishes in the 200-yard breaststroke, before Harnish reached the wall first in the 500-yard freestyle (4:48.24).
A pair of Lady Bulldog freshmen – Luther and Carter – topped the 100-yard butterfly. In 54.41, Luther touched the wall first, followed by Carter at 54.76.
In the 3-meter springboard, Austin trailed just one Razorback, Brooke Schultz, the 2018 NCAA champion, for a second-place finish (321.00).
Carter and Della Torre found themselves at the top of the standings again in the 200-yard IM, before the 400-yard freestyle relay of Fa'amausili, Harnish, Luther and Burchill sealed the Georgia victory in 3:23.96.
