No. 2 Georgia Blanks Mizzou, 4-0
April 09, 2017 | Women's Tennis
The second-ranked Bulldogs shut out their fourth-straight opponent with a 4-0 victory over No. 46 Missouri Sunday afternoon at the Mizzou Tennis Complex.
Georgia (16-3, 10-1) increased their win streak to nine matches to finish off the regular season road schedule. The Bulldogs continue their doubles tear by earning the doubles point for the 10th time in a row. In singles, Mariana Gould and Kennedy Shaffer ran through their opponents before Caroline Brinson clinched the win for the Bulldogs. The Tigers dropped to 10-12 on the season and 1-10 in the Southeastern Conference.
"In the SEC, it is always a battle and today was certainly that," Georgia head coach Jeff Wallace said. "All three doubles teams played at a high level. We came out with good energy; great focus and we hit our targets on the serve. Singles was tough. Missouri is a 1-10 team in the conference but that doesn't mean it isn't going to be close. Mariana [Gould] played inspiring tennis as did Kennedy [Shaffer] before our senior, Caroline [Brinson] finished it for us."
The Bulldogs' 28th-ranked doubles duo Elena Christofi and Kennedy Shaffer defeated Cassidy Spearman and Tate Schroeder, 6-1, on court two to push their record to 12-2 overall including seven wins in a row. To clinch it, Marta Gonzalez and Gould at No. 3 dispatched Mackenzy Middlebrooks and Clare Raley, 6-2.
Georgia carried momentum into singles by taking five first sets. The court six match wrapped up first as Gould, ranked No. 112 in ITA singles, cruised past Clare Raley, 6-2, 6-1. Shaffer, No. 64, followed with a 6-0, 6-3 victory over Cassidy Spearman on court three.
Brinson, ranked 66th, gathered the match clincher at No. 4 with a 6-2, 7-5 contest over Mackenzy Middlebrooks. The senior has secured the win for Georgia in the last three matches.
"At this point in the season, you want your seniors to be closing the match and that is exactly what CB has been doing," Wallace added. "It was the second clincher this weekend and her third in a row."
The Bulldogs return home to cap the regular season with home matches against No. 21 LSU on Friday at 5 p.m. followed by a Sunday meeting with No. 22 Texas A&M at 1 p.m.
