ATHENS, Ga. --- Georgia's Ellen Perez picked up Southeastern Conference women's tennis Player of the Week award for March 13-19.
The junior from Shellharbour, Australia collected her second career player of the week honor as she received the award early in 2016. Perez played a vital role in the Bulldogs' road victories over top-ranked Florida and then-No. 21 South Carolina this past weekend. She won both her singles matches and doubles matches to cap a perfect weekend.
The latest edition of the ITA singles rankings saw Perez jump 29 spots to land at No. 26. In the doubles rankings, Perez and partner Caroline Brinson went from unranked to 18th.
In singles, Perez defeated her opponents first both times on court one to give Georgia an early 2-0 lead after doubles play. At Florida, Perez breezed past fellow Aussie Belinda Woolcock, then-ranked 19th, 6-2,6-1. Against South Carolina, she took down then-No. 58 Mia Horvit 6-3, 6-1. Perez improved to 7-4 on the season, all on court one in dual season.
The Perez/Brinson pair edged then-No. 15 Brooke Austin and Kourtney Keegan of Florida to even doubles play at 1-all which led to Georgia clinching in the deciding match. Then in Columbia, S.C. Perez/Brinson notched another ranked win over then-No. 27 Hadley Berg and Paige Cline to open the door for another clinch on court two.
