Georgia Boasts Impressive Final Day at MLK
January 16, 2017 | Men's Tennis
Head Coach Manuel Diaz and freshman Robert Loeb recap the MLK Invitational.
Final Stats
ATLANTA -- Four singles wins and a trio of doubles victories against Georgia Tech were the highlight of the final day of action for the Georgia men's tennis team at the MLK Invitational on Monday.
Georgia will now have a few days off before playing its first dual match of the season at Georgia Tech in Atlanta at 5 p.m. ET on Friday. Bulldog fans are encouraged to arrive at least an hour early due to parking and traffic in the area.
"Overall, I thought we showed great resiliency all day," head coach Manuel Diaz said. "We have a lot of positives to take from this first weekend into our first dual match of the season against Georgia Tech on Friday. Wayne was up a break in the third and lost a tough one against a really good player in Chris Eubanks. Emil, Walker and Robert all played really well and battled back after losing the first set in each of those matches. All in all, it was a good weekend for our team."
It was a clean sweep for the Bulldogs on the doubles courts. Georgia powered its way past Tech at all three positions, with the 54th-ranked tandem of Jan Zielinski and Robert Loeb taking down Georgia Tech's team of Chris Eubanks and Andrew Li, 6-2.
The Bulldog tandem of Walker Duncan and Wayne Montgomery followed suit with a strong 6-4 victory over GT's Daniel Yun and Carlos Divar, before Emil Reinberg and Alex Phillips downed the Tech pair of Chris Yun and Michael Kay, 7-5.
"Our doubles play was exceptional today," Diaz added. "All three our of teams played outstanding and it was great to see them pick up three wins against quality opponents."
That impressive play carried over into singles as Reinberg, Loeb and Duncan all fought back after first-set losses to record wins. 31st-ranked Reinberg took down Tech's Daniel Yun, 4-6, 7-5, 6-2, while Loeb defeated Chris Yun, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 and 79th-ranked Duncan recorded a 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 triumph against GT's Cole Fiegel.
Alex Phillips also battled his opponent through a three-set match, taking the 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 victory over Elijah Melendez.
In what was a matchup of two of the top players in the nation, 22nd-ranked Montgomery came out on the short end of a three-set affair against the ninth-ranked Eubanks. After hanging on for a win in the first-set tie-breaker, 7-6 (4), Montgomery dropped the second set, 6-3, and was up a break in the third before falling, 6-4.
Georgia now enters its dual-match season against Georgia Tech on Friday before hosting the ITA Kick-Off Weekend on Jan. 27-29.
