MacLean Takes Fifth In 400 Freestyle

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil --- Canada’s Brittany MacLean, who completed her collegiate eligibility last season, came in fifth in the 400-meter freestyle to highlight Georgia’s showing in the Olympics on Sunday.
MacLean, who helped Georgia win three NCAA titles during her career, reached the wall in 4:04.69 to take fifth. MacLean entered the finals seeded fourth after going a Canadian record 4:03.43 in prelims.
Rising senior Olivia Smoliga qualified for the 100-meter backstroke finals, which will be held on Monday, as she placed eighth in 59.35. She placed sixth in her initial heat with a time of 59.60.
Incoming freshman Javier Acevedo of Canada placed 17th in the 100-meter backstroke with a time of 54.11. Finland’s Matias Koski, who ended his collegiate career with the 2015-16 season, came in 21st in the 200-meter freestyle as he stopped the clock in 1:47.40.
