ATHENS, Ga. -- The Georgia volleyball team (3-0) took the Benson Hospitality Invitational crown after defeating Savannah State 3-0 and San Francisco 3-1 to cap a perfect opening weekend.
"During (the Savannah State) match we were able to use a lot of different people and try out a lot of new things," said Georgia head coach Lizzy Stemke. "That is going to need to be something that we are comfortable with over the course of the season because we are going to need different people to contribute at different times. In the late match, San Francisco came out hot and on fire and we needed to be able to respond, and we did that very well. I think we've got a group that's going to work together and respond bravely in tough situations."
The Bulldogs got strong contributions all around against the Savannah State Lady Tigers, including Kendall Kazor and Anna Kate Karstens tying for the team lead in kills with seven. Elle McCord also had 11 digs in the contest.
As a team, the Bulldogs hit .486 while holding their counterparts to .103 as a group. The dominant effort was finished in straight sets, 25-12, 25-10, 25-14.
In the nightcap, Maddie Lobenstein stepped up with a double-double, her second of the young season, with 12 kills and 12 digs. Kazor boasted another great performance with 11 kills and five blocks to help the Bulldogs finish off an undefeated opening weekend.
The Bulldogs claimed the opening set 25-18 before the Dons countered with a 25-21 second-set victory. Georgia showcased its resilience after the intermission, taking the final two sets 25-16, 25-17.
Lobenstein was named the tournament MVP and she was joined on the All-Tournament Team by junior libero Cassidy Anderson and freshman setter Meghan Donovan.
