RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil --- Georgia volunteer coach César Castro of Brazil finished 14th in the men’s 3-meter springboard diving preliminaries at the Olympics on Monday to qualify for the semifinals.

Representing the Games’ host country for the fourth time, Castro rolled up 398.85 points on Monday, despite missing a forward dive with 3.5 somersaults that netted him just 41.85 points. He averaged 71.4 on his other five dives.

Castro and the top 18 divers from Monday will compete on Tuesday at 9 a.m. in the semifinals. The top 12 after that session will advance to the finals on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Georgia head diving coach Dan Laak is serving as one of the coaches for Brazil. Castro has served as Georgia's volunteer assistant coach while training under Laak the past three seasons.

Castro came in ninth in the 2004 Games in Athens, Greece. He placed 17th at the 2012 London Olympics and 24th at the 2008 Beijing Games.
