Reinberg Advances To Edwardsville Quarters
July 28, 2016 | Men's Tennis
ATHENS, Ga. – Georgia men's tennis rising sophomore Emil Reinberg added to his already impressive list of accomplishments this summer with yet another win on the International Tennis Federation Pro Circuit — this time against fifth-seeded Facundo Mena in the second round of the Edwardsville (Illinois) Futures event.
Reinberg downed the Argentina native, 7-6, 6-4, to advance to the quarterfinals. Mena was not only a top-5 seed in this week's tournament, he is also ranked No. 392 on the ATP World Tour. Reinberg won three matches in the qualifiers and defeated Mwendwa Mbithi, 6-4, 6-4, in the first round of the main draw before recording Thursday's victory.
The win is the latest strong showing for the Atlanta native. Just last week, Reinberg teamed with incoming Georgia freshman Nathan Ponwith to win the doubles title at the Lewis and Clark Pro Tennis Classic, while earlier in June he took down Stanford's No. 1 singles player and 2016 ITA All-American Tom Fawcett at the Wichita Tennis Open.
Reinberg, who won 20 singles matches (5-0 against Southeastern Conference foes) and teamed with Wayne Montgomery at the No. 3 doubles court last season, is busy preparing for the 2016-17 campaign. The Bulldogs return five letterwinners off of last year's squad that won its fourth-straight SEC title and advanced all the way to the NCAA semifinals. In addition, Georgia was able to sign the No. 1 signing class in the nation this past year.
