John Isner Advances To Third Round At Wimbledon
July 01, 2016 | Men's Tennis
LONDON — Former Georgia men's tennis star John Isner has moved into the third round of the 2016 Wimbledon Championships. The former Bulldog has yet to lose a set in two matches, rolling to a pair of wins at the All England Club.
In a match that was originally scheduled for Tuesday, but did not finish until Thursday due to darkness and then rain, Isner used two tie-breaker sets to take down Cypriot Marcos Baghdatis, 7-6 (2), 7-6 (5), 6-3, in the first round. Isner fought back in the second set after Baghdatis went up a break, 3-1, before play was suspended on Wednesday and eventually concluded on Thursday.
Isner then used three tie-breaker sets to defeat Australian Matthew Barton in the second round, 7-6 (8), 7-6 (3), 7-6 (8), on Friday. Isner, who is the highest ranked American at No. 17 on the ATP World Tour, will now face No. 12-ranked Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France in the third round.
A native of Greensboro, N.C., Isner was a four-time All-American at Georgia from 2004-07, and helped lead the Bulldogs to a perfect 32-0 record and a national title as a senior. He holds the school record for career singles (138), doubles (138), and combined (276) wins.
