TULSA, Okla. — Georgia's seventh-ranked men's tennis team concluded action at the 2016 NCAA Championships on Thursday as singles player Wayne Montgomery and the doubles duo of Austin Smith and Ben Wagland fell in tough matches at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center.
Montgomery, who finishes the 2016 season with 27 singles victories, dropped a 6-2, 6-0 match to ninth-ranked and NCAA Tournament Most Valuable Player Thai-Son Kwiatkowski of Virginia. The 11th-ranked doubles tandem of Smith Wagland lost a 7-6 (5) tiebreaker, before coming back to take a 6-2 win in the second set. The match was then decided in a 10-point tiebreaker, with Tulane's 18th-ranked duo of Chi-Shan Jao-Dominik Koepfer taking a 13-11 victory to win the match.
A native of Somerset West South Africa, Montgomery completes a strong sophomore season that saw him earn First-Team All-SEC honors, while being named to the 2016 NCAA All-Tournament Team. Montgomery finished the year with a 27-14 overall singles mark, which included 12 wins against ranked opponents.
The senior duo of Smith and Wagland concluded an impressive run with Thursday's loss. The Bulldog tandem earned the No.1 seed in the 2015 NCAA Doubles Championship and followed that up with a team-best 29-12 record, including a 16-5 mark at the top doubles position during the 2016 season.
Thursday's action concludes the Bulldogs' run in the 2016 NCAA Championships. Georgia finished as a national semifinalist after earning its fourth-straight Southeastern Conference Championship in 2016.
