Georgia Completes Day One At Bulldog Scramble
November 04, 2016 | Men's Tennis
ATHENS, Ga. - The Georgia men's tennis team went 9-3 in singles and 3-0 in doubles to complete Day One at the 2016 Bulldog Scramble on Friday.
On what was a cool and windy afternoon at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex, the Bulldogs played host to a strong field of players from Georgia Tech, Wake Forest, Princeton, South Carolina and Miami.
Georgia capped off a successful day by tallying three wins over ranked opponents, with the bulk of the Bulldogs' victories coming from underclassmen.
"It was a very good day overall," associate head coach Bo Hodge said. "We only lost a couple of matches and beat a few ranked opponents, so I thought our guys did really well. The energy was great and I really felt like we played at a high level."
The Bulldogs gained early momentum by going through doubles with an unblemished record.
Robert Loeb and Jan Zielinski paired together for the fifth time this fall and improved their record to 4-1 with an 8-4 victory. Teammates Emil Reinberg and Walker Duncan registered an 8-5 win against South Carolina's duo of Sam Swank and Alex Fennell, while the Bulldog tandem of Andy Martinez and Alex Phillips fought for an 8-7 (2) triumph.
Emil Reinberg and Jan Zielinski looked impressive during singles competition. Zielinski failed to lose a single set Friday afternoon, going to 2-0 in singles with two-straight victories. Reinberg downed two ranked opponents, defeating No. 73 Carlos Benito from Georgia Tech, 0-6, 7-5, 6-4, before recording a 6-3, 7-5 win over Miami's 58th-ranked Christian Langmo.
All the action starts back up Saturday at 10 a.m. with doubles. There will be another round of doubles at 11 a.m., followed by one singles round set to begin around 1:30 p.m.
