TULSA, Okla. — Walker Duncan won his first match of the day before losing in the third round of qualifying as four Georgia men's tennis players continued play Tuesday at the 2016 Saint Francis Health System ITA All-American Championships.
Duncan, listed as a 17-24 seed in the qualifying draw, defeated David Warren of Rice 6-2, 6-4 in the second round of qualifying after advancing out of Monday's first round. The sophomore then played Herkko Pollanen of Ohio State, falling 6-4, 6-3. Pollanen is the 8-seed in the draw.
"Overall, we didn't get the results we wanted," associate head coach Bo Hodge said, "but I was happy with the way the guys competed … Tennis is a sport where one or two points can decide a match, and unfortunately today those didn't go our way. But I think the guys got a lot of this tournament and they'll learn from it."
Freshman Nathan Ponwith, who also started today in the second round of qualifying, was defeated by North Florida's Jack FIndel-Hawkins in a very tight match. The Scottsdale, Ariz. native was able to win the second set, but eventually lost by a score of 7-5, 6-7, 7-6.
In doubles action, Duncan and Wayne Montgomery were defeated in the final round of qualifying. After the tandem put together two wins Monday, they fell to the No. 6 seed in the draw, Jack Murray and Ronnie Schneider of UNC, by a score of 6-2, 5-7, 1-0 (11-9). It was a thrilling match that went right down to the end, as the Georgia pair got out to a 3-0 lead in the last set tiebreaker before eventually falling 11-9.
Playing in the qualifying consolation draw, Emil Reinberg defeated Jayson Amos of Oregon, 7-5, 6-2.
"Emil losing yesterday and having to come back today and play a back-draw match — mentally, it was tough for him, but he did a good job of getting a win and leaving here on a good note," Hodge said.
Tuesday represented the end of the qualifying rounds, with the main draw set to begin Thursday. Wayne Montgomery earned a bid to the main draw and will begin play after Wednesday's break in action. Georgia is tied for second all-time behind Stanford for the most singles titles with five in this event. The Bulldogs also boast the only back-to-back singles champion in the All-American Championships, with Al Parker taking home the title in both 1989 and 1990.
