Montgomery Falls In ITA Regional Finals

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Georgia men's tennis junior Wayne Montgomery fell in three sets in the title match of the 2016 ITA Southeast Regional Championships at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center.
Montgomery, a native of Somerset West, South Africa, was able to win the first set before Guy Iradukunda of Florida State took the match 3-6, 6-1, 6-3. After reeling off five consecutive wins to reach the finals, Montgomery's fall record now stands at 11-3.
On the weekend, Georgia players won 15 singles matches, including 13 from Montgomery, Emil Reinberg and Walker Duncan, who made up three of the four players in Sunday's semifinals. Montgomery got the best of Reinberg, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, in a match that put two Bulldogs up against each other with a championship berth on the line. Iradukunda defeated Duncan, 6-4, 6-2, in the other semifinal match.
In Monday's doubles semifinals, Montgomery and Reinberg, the 7th seed in the draw, took the match to a third-set tiebreaker but were upended by South Florida's Peter Bertran and Justin Roberts, 7-6 (5), 4-6, 10-8. Bertran and Roberts were seeded 8th in the draw.
The 2016 USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships are set for Nov. 3-6 in New York. Also that weekend, Georgia will host the Bulldog Scramble, running from Nov. 4-6, at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.
