RALEIGH, N.C. --- Georgia's Manuela Carbajo Ré carded a 4-over 76 in Thursday's opening round of the NCAA Raleigh Regional, placing her tied for 48th in the individual field at Lonnie Poole Golf Course.
Carbajo Ré teed off from No. 10 and opened her day with a triple-bogey at No. 10. She birdied No. 11 but double-bogeyed No. 12 to slip to 4-over.
"I don't know if she was a little nervous or what," head coach Josh Brewer said. "That tee ball was one she struggled with yesterday. We may have to do something a little different tomorrow."
After another double-bogey at No. 16, a trio of birdies at No. 18, No. 2 and No. 7 brought Carbajo Ré back to 3-over. However, she bogeyed No. 8 en route to the clubhouse.
"Really, she had three bad swings that probably cost her four or five shots," Brewer said. "You have to look at the positives. If she just makes bogey on those three holes, she'd be up near the leaders. I'm proud of her for continuing to fight and bouncing back. She played her final 11 holes a 2-under in some very tough conditions."
Carbajo Ré is looking to move on to the NCAA Championships, which will be May 22-27 in Bradenton, Fla. The top-three golfers who are not members of the six teams advancing teams from Raleigh will compete in the NCAA Championships as individuals.
The cut for an NCAA individual spot following Thursday's opening round was even-par; however, that mark is fluid as the team leaderboard shifts throughout the day.
Friday's second round will begin at 8:15 a.m. on 10 for Carbajo Ré. She will be paired with Jessica Welch from Jacksonville and Ashley Burke from South Florida. Live scoring is available at www.golfstat.com.
