ATHENS----Georgia fell to eighth-ranked Florida 7-4 on Sunday at Foley Field as the Gators took two out of three in the series in front of 2,883 fans.
Robert Tyler's return to Georgia's (22-25, 7-16 SEC) starting rotation was spoiled by the Gators' quick start aided by a Bulldog miscue. Florida (35-13, 15-9 SEC) scored four runs (one earned) in two innings before Tyler reached his limited pitch count. The sophomore ace had been out sincea forearm strainon February 27th against Georgia Southern.
"Robert's velocity was great," Georgia head coach Scott Stricklin said. "We put him in a difficult situation not making plays, but I thought he looked fresh...Their pitching staff is as good as you're going to see...I thought their pitching staff did a good job of settling our bats down, but the story of the game was us not getting it done defensively."
After the Gators took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning, the Bulldogs' Daniel Nichols hit a long three-run home run to right field to give Georgia the advantage in the bottom half. The homer was Nichols' fifth of the season, good for third on the team.
Georgia's lineup got another lift in the bottom of the third inning. After the Gators pushed across two in the top of the inning, sophomore Stephen Wrenn hit a solo shot to left to tie the game at 4-4. The home run was the Georgia centerfielder's seventh of the season and second in as many days.
Gator right fielder Ryan Larson put Florida ahead for good in the sixth with a bases-clearing double off of Bulldog reliever Jared Walsh. Walsh (4-2), who received the loss, would finish with a line of three runs (two earned) on two hits, two walks and no strikeouts. He also played designated hitter during the game.
Florida's Taylor Lewis (3-1) earned the victory after working 2.2 scoreless innings. The Gators' Danny Young attained his second save of the season after shutting out the Bulldogs over the final three frames.
Georgia next goes on the road to face Kentucky, with the series starting at 6:30 p.m. ET on Friday, May 8.
