Gymdogs Place Fifth In NCAA Semifinal

FORT WORTH, Texas----The Georgia gymnastics team placed fifth with a 196.600 in the first NCAA semifinal Friday afternoon at the Fort Worth Convention Center.
Florida and Utah tied for first with a 197.475, followed by Stanford with a 197.025. All three teams advance to the NCAA Super Six on Saturday. Michigan was fourth with a 197.025, Georgia fifth and UCLA sixth with a 196.400.
Three Georgia gymnasts advanced to Sunday's Individual Event Finals: Brandie Jay on vault, Brittany Rogers on bars and Mary Beth Box on floor.
"We are excited about those three first team All-Americans," said head coach Danna Durante. "They are all juniors, so they'll be back next year. This was a tough competition. This team fought hard and grew a ton this year. we have lessons to lead. Next season starts in about two days, and we'll get back to work
Georgia (14-14) opened with a 49.100 on vault, and Jay led the effort with a 9.925 to tied for third. Michigan led after one rotation with a 49.225 on bars, while Utah was second with a 49.175.
The Gymdogs had a bye in the second rotation. Stanford opened its meet with a 49.575 on bars, while Michigan added a 49.250 on beam to lead after two rotations ahead of UCLA's 97.950.
UGA turned in a 49.35 on bars in the third rotation and stood fifth at the halfway point of the meet with a 98.450. Chelsea Davis and Rogers closed the rotation with a 9.9 and 9.95, respectively. Rogers was tied for first on bars until the final rotation, and she finished in a tie for second. Stanford led with a 98.875, followed by Florida and Utah at the halfway point.
Georgia scored a 48.9 on beam in the fourth rotation and stood third with a 147.350. Morgan Reynolds led the team with a 9.85 in the leadoff position. Utah led with a 147.975, and Michigan was second with a 147.850. Georgia had its second bye in the fifth rotation, and Michigan closed the meet on vault, while UCLA finished on beam.
In the final rotation, Georgia scored a 49.250 behind a 9.9 by Box, who tied for fourth.
Sunday's individual event finals will begin at 3 p.m. ET.
