Georgia To Face Penn State In TaxSlayer Bowl
December 06, 2015 | Football
ATHENS -- The Georgia football team will return to Jacksonville to play in the TaxSlayer Bowl on Saturday, January 2, with a Noon kickoff against Penn State from the Big Ten.
The Bulldogs on Sunday were extended, and accepted, an invitation to the bowl, which will be played at EverBank Field and televised by ESPN.
The Bulldogs have made four previous trips to the Jacksonville bowl game. Georgia and Maryland tied, 20-20, in the Jan. 1, 1948, Gator Bowl game; the `Dogs defeated North Carolina, 7-3, in the Dec. 31, 1971 Gator Bowl; Georgia defeated Michigan State, 34-27, in the Jan. 1, 1989, Gator Bowl game; and the Bulldogs suffered a 24-19 loss to Nebraska in the 2014 TaxSlayer Bowl game.
This will mark only the second time Georgia and Penn State have met. The second-ranked Nittany Lions defeated the top ranked Bulldogs, 27-23, in the 1983 Sugar Bowl game.
"We are delighted with the selection of our team to represent the Southeastern Conference in the TaxSlayer Bowl," said UGA J. Reid Parker Director of Athletics Greg McGarity. "Jacksonville is blessed with good weather, outstanding attractions, a first class stadium and we look forward to competing against an outstanding Penn State team. I'm sure our coaches, players, and fans are excited and anxious to get back to Jacksonville and enjoy all the city has to offer."
"This is an exciting opportunity for our team and especially our seniors to play on January 2 in a great facility and warm weather city," said UGA interim head coach Bryan McClendon. "It will be a chance to record another ten-win season and we're looking forward to playing Penn State which is one of the iconic brands in college football. They are very rich in tradition and have had a successful season. I'm sure they will be at their very best on January 2."
This will be Georgia's 51st bowl game--sixth most of any team in the country. The Bulldogs' all-time bowl record is 28-19-3.
