ATHENS----The Georgia gymnastics team previewed its 2016 routines at the annual Sneak Peek Friday night at the Suzanne Yoculan Gymnastics Center.
Counting the top five scores on each event, the Gymdogs registered a 196.725, including nine scores of 9.875 or higher. Senior Brandie Jay led the way with a 9.95 on vault, 9.925 on floor, and she added a 9.85 on the balance beam. Fans were also able to catch a glimpse of three Georgia freshmen: Caroline Bradford, Gracie Cherrey and Sydney Snead.
"We saw some really good things tonight," said head coach Danna Durante. "Overall it was a big success. There are things that we need to tighten up, but I'm excited about their energy and enthusiasm. I was pleased all around. It's hard to find find the amount of energy and adrenaline that a crowd this size can bring, especially in here where it's incredibly intimate. It's difficult to create that in a practice setting, so that's why tonight it so valuable."
Other top scores on the night included a 9.9 by Ashlyn Broussard on beam and a 9.9 on floor by Mary Beth Box. The Gymdogs scored a 49.35 on both vault and floor with back-to-back 9.875s on vault by Broussard and Gigi Marino. Marino preceded Box and Jay on floor with a 9.875.
"It was so exciting," Snead said. "There were so many fans and it was fun to see all the support we have. I think everyone did great. We found areas we need to work on, so we'll get back in the gym after the break and get going."
Ninth-ranked Georgia will open the season with two consecutive road meets at No. 7 Michigan on Jan. 9 and No. 13 Arkansas on Jan. 15. The home opener is slated for Jan. 18 against eighth-ranked Stanford.
