STARKVILLE, Miss. --- The Georgia volleyball team (5-11, 0-4) finished its Magnolia State roadtrip in Starkville, falling 3-0 at Mississippi State (13-6, 3-3) on Sunday.
MSU took the sweep with scores of 25-17, 25-11 and 25-18, using 14 service aces to boost the maroon Bulldogs.
"We struggled to find any rhythm today in both part of the games--offensively or defensively," said head coach Lizzy Stemke. "When you are on the road in the sec, you have to put strings together with more rhythm and more consistency. When you don't do that, you struggle. We are going to get back to the gym with a number of things to fix, but we continue to believe in this group and ready to get back to work."
For Georgia, redshirt junior Megan Spencer hit a team-best .375 percentage with five kills while sophomore Maddie Lobenstein posted four kills. Sophomore Cassidy Anderson led the backrow with seven digs. Defensively at the net, redshirt junior Desiree McCray notched five blocks, making it the fifth time this season that the South Carolina native had five or more blocks in a match.
Early service errors hurt Georgia in the first set, but the Bulldogs got within one of MSU at 12-11 after a Lobenstein kill. However, the home team opened it up with four-straight points immediately after en route to the frame win.
It was back and forth in the beginning of the second set. Georgia took the lead at 7-6 after a redshirt sophomore Amanda Dachs kill, but a 12-0 scoring spree from MSU in the closing half put the team ahead 2-0 going into the locker rooms.
MSU looked to have a handle on the action in the third set with a 5-0 run to go up 9-4. Georgia quickly responded with its own spree, rallying an 8-1 run to get within one at 17-16 with a Spencer-McCray block. MSU ended the threat, forcing a Georgia timeout at 21-17 before earning the straight-set sweep.
This week has the Bulldogs back in Athens, as Georgia faces South Carolina and Missouri in the coming days. The match against the Gamecocks on Wednesday, Oct. 14 will be on the SEC Network. Georgia then takes on the Tigers on Sunday, Oct. 18 on SEC Network+/WatchESPN.
