Bulldogs Perfect On First Day Of Southern Intercollegiate Championships

ATHENS——The Georgia men's tennis team won all six of its matches on the first day of the 47th annual Southern Intercollegiate Championships Friday at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.
Friday's action included two rounds of doubles and the first round of singles.
The Bulldogs won five doubles matches, including two by freshman Peter Bertran and junior Nick Wood. The pair wrapped up the day by knocking off Georgia Tech's No. 1 seeded team of 20th-ranked Carlos Benito and Eduardo Segura, 8-7(5). They began the day with an 8-5 win over Clemson's Austin Ansari and Luke Johnson.
In other doubles action, the second-seeded duo of Paul Oosterbaan and Ben Wagland cruised to an 8-1 victory over David Biosca and Ismael Merino of East Tennessee State. Fourth-seeded Eric Diaz and Austin Smith advanced with an 8-6 win over Ignacio Hernandez and Damian Okrutny of Armstrong State, and eighth-seeded Nathan Pasha and Wayne Montgomery claimed an 8-3 win over ABAC's Josh Page and Corey Smith. All four Georgia doubles teams will return to action Saturday at 8 a.m.
In singles, Oosterbaan won his first collegiate match against Vanderbilt's Suresh Eswaran, 6-2, 6-2. He will play in the round of 32 Saturday along with Pasha, Montgomery, Wagland and Wood. Diaz, Bertran and Andy Martinez will also play in the second round of Division II.
"It was a good start for our guys today," said head coach Manuel Diaz. "Our team of Nathan and Wayne looked impressive, and Paul had a great start to his freshman year with victories in both singles and doubles. Austin and Eric got by, and it was great to see a team of Nick and Peter get a couple of significant wins there. There will be a little bit bigger challenges tomorrow. I'm looking forward to seeing everyone in their singles match. Hopefully we'll be ready to go early with doubles at 8:00 and singles to follow."
Day two action begins Saturday with the Division I doubles round of 16 at 8 a.m.
