SHANGHAI, China --- Former Georgia diver Laura Ryan came in 11th in the women's 3-meter springboard final Sunday in the FINA Diving World Cup.
The World Cup was the top international meet of the 2014 season and the last major world meet before Olympic qualifying begins in 2015.
Ryan finished with 282.85 points in her first individual world final. She opened the afternoon with 64.50 points on an inward 2½ pike, followed with 57 points on a back 2½ pike in the second round and then came up with 72 points on her reverse 2½ pike in round three. Her only miss of the day came in round four, when she scored just 26.35 points on her front 3½ pike, but she rebounded to close out her list with 63 points on her front 2½ with a twist to finish 11th.
"I was excited to be competing in my first individual final at a world meet," Ryan said. "I wish I would have hit my front, but I got everything moving the way I wanted to and that gives me a lot of confidence going into next year."
On Wednesday, Ryan and Abby Johnston finished 14th with 262.50 points in the women's synchronized 3-meter preliminaries and did not advance to the finals. They scored just 27.60 points on their first-round front dive pike to sit in 17th place after round one and had to climb their way back up the standings. After scoring more than 60 points on all three optional dives, including 66.60 points on a back 2½ pike in the last round, they moved up to 14th place and 8.7 points shy of making the finals.
