Montgomery Wins Tennessee Valley Open Championship

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn.-----University of Georgia incoming freshman Wayne Montgomery won the Tennis Valley Open Championship, a USTA sanctioned tournament held this week at the Manker Patten Tennis Club.

Second-seeded Montgomery defeated Vanderbilt's No. 1 seed Gonzalez Austin, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, in the final on Sunday. Austin, who played No. 1 for the Commodores in 2014, was an All-American and finished the season ranked 19th nationally.

Montgomery did not lose a set in the first five rounds of the tournament on his way to reaching Sunday's final. A native of Johannesburg, South Africa, Montgomery has won numerous South African and African junior titles and has represented his country internationally in team and singles events. He reached an ITF U-18 world ranking of No. 7 in 2013.

Montgomery has won ITF Junior Circuit tournaments in Gaberone, Port Elizabeth, East London, Montreal (doubles), Potchefstroom (singles and doubles), Traralgon (doubles), and Maryland (singles and doubles).

UGA's Eric Diaz also won three matches in the tournament to reach the quarterfinals in Chattanooga.
