Kalisz, Bulldogs Stand Fifth In NCAAs

AUSTIN, Texas --- Chase Kalisz earned a silver medal and Georgia broke three school records to highlight the Bulldogs' showing on Thursday at the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships in the Jamail Center on the University of Texas campus.
The Bulldogs stand fifth with 74 points after one day of competition. Texas has the team lead with 146 points, followed by California with 145, Florida with 137 and Michigan with 109.
"The guys really did their jobs today," Senior Associate Head Coach Harvey Humphries said. "We knew they were coming in prepared and it showed. If you looked at it before today, we probably were going to be about 11th and instead we're fifth. That's a testament to how well these guys performed today."
Kalisz finished as the runner-up in the 200 individual medley, lowering his own school record to 1:41.19. That is also the sixth-fastest short course yards time in history. Kalisz actually eclipsed his own school record twice on Thursday as he went 1:42.53 in prelims. Nicolas Fink came in seventh in the event with a time of 1:43.76.
In the 500 freestyle, Matias Koski took fifth as he stopped the clock in 4:13.97.
The 400 medley relay of Taylor Dale, Fink, Doug Reynolds and Koski reached the wall in 3:05.50 to place fourth. That eclipsed the school mark set last month at the SEC Championships.
During prelims, Dale led off the 400 medley relay with a 100 backstroke split of 45.73 to lower his own school mark set at the SECs.
"It was a great day," Fink said. "We had guys stepping up today and our days only get better from here. It's good knowing we're swimming with teammates and friends and that they're all here to cheer each other on. This is a good environment."
The NCAAs will continue on Friday with prelims at noon and will conclude on Saturday.
