Military Appreciation Day Highlights Charleston Southern Game

ATHENS ---- The National Anthem and special halftime music by country music star Lee Greenwood will highlight a large number of promotions included in Military Appreciation Day at Sanford Stadium Saturday during the game with Charleston Southern.

Halftime will feature the Redcoat Band performing the hymns of each of the service academies in addition to God Bless America and America the Beautiful. Greenwood, five-time Male Vocalist of the Year and Grammy winner, will perform two songs - Where the Stars & Stripes & the Eagle Fly and his signature recording, God Bless the USA. During Greenwood's performance, approximately 76 Purple Heart recipients from the State of Georgia will line the South Sideline.

At every timeout, video and/or photographs of service men and women will scroll on the video board. These photos have been sent in by active and retired service members from all branches of the military.

At a second quarter timeout, General James Livingston will be honored for receiving the Medal of Honor for valor during the Vietnam War. General Livingston was born on January 12, 1940 in Towns, Georgia. On May 2, 1968, while serving as Commanding Officer, Company E, 2nd Battalion, 4th Marines, he distinguished himself above and beyond the call of duty in action against enemy forces, and earned the Medal of Honor. He is a three-time recipient of the Purple Heart. He was presented the Medal of Honor on May 14, 1970 by President Richard Nixon.

Former Georgia quarterback Aaron Murray will also be recognized during a first quarter timeout.

Pregame Recognitions

  • Tickets were offered to Fort Gordon, Robins Air Force Base, Fort Benning, Moody Air Force Base, Fort Stewart/Hunter Army Airfield, Kings Bay Naval Base/Jacksonville USO, National Guard of Georgia, UGA Air Force ROTC, UGA Army ROTC and UGA Veterans. Over 5,400 tickets were distributed to these groups.
  • Public Address Announcement read prior to National Anthem asking all Veteran's to please rise and be honored. This will be followed by a moment of remembrance for those soldiers how are missing in action, killed in action or are currently serving.
  • Lee Greenwood, 5-time Male Vocalist of the Year and Grammy Winner, will perform the Star Spangled Banner.

  • The photos scrolled during the 1st quarter have been submitted by the University of Georgia Student Veterans Resource Center (SVRC). The SVRC, founded in April of 2013, serves as a go-to location for wayfinding and entry into a wide array of services provided by UGA for the over 200 student veterans currently enrolled. As an emerging one-stop shot, the SVRC offers support, advocacy, and a convenient respite for the veterans to gather throughout the day.

2nd Quarter/Timeout #3

  • General James Livingston will be honored for receiving the Medal of Honor for valor during the Vietnam War.
    • General James Livingston. James Livingston was born on January 12, 1940 in Towns, Georgia. He entered North Georgia College and State University (The Military College of Georgia) in 1957 and was a member of the school's nationally recognized Corps of Cadets until he transferred to pursue a major that the school did not offer. In 1962, Livingston earned a B.S degree in civil engineering from Auburn University. He was then commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Marine Corps in June 1962.
    • On May 2, 1968, while serving as Commanding Officer, Company E, 2nd Battalion, 4th Marines, he distinguished himself above and beyond the call of duty in action against enemy forces, and earned the Medal of Honor. He is a three-time recipient of the Purple Heart. He was presented the Medal of Honor on May 14, 1970 by President Richard Nixon.
    • General James Livingston's early assignments included service as a platoon commander, intelligence officer, and as a Recruit Training Regiment series commander. He was promoted to captain in June 1966, and served as the Commanding Officer of the Marine detachment aboard the Aircraft Carrier USS Wasp before joining the 3rd Marine Division in the Republic of Vietnam in August 1967.
    • After his second tour in Vietnam, he served in a number of important posts before returning to Vietnam. He served as Operations Officer for the Vietnam evacuation operations which included Operation Frequent Wind, the evacuation of Saigon.
    • Following the war General Livingston commanded the Marine Barracks, United Kingdom, London, and then served as the Commanding Officer at the Marine Recruit Depot, Parris Island, South Carolina. During this same period, he earned a master's degree in Management from Webster University in 1984.
    • Following advancement to brigadier general on June 10, 1988, he served as Deputy Director for Operations at the National Military Command Center in Washington, D. C. During Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm, General Livingston commanded the Marine Air Ground Combat Center and developed the Desert Warfare Training Program. After command of the 1st Marine Expeditionary Brigade, he was advanced to major general on July 8, 1991, and assumed command of the 4th Marine Division. In July 1992, he assumed command of the newly created Marine Reserve Force, and continued through its reorganization in October 1994, with its new title, "Marine Forces Reserve".
    • General Livingston is a graduate of the Amphibious Warfare School, the Marine Corps Command and Staff College and the Air War College. He is one of Georgia's most highly decorated veterans in addition to being a recipient of our Nation's highest award for valor, the Medal of Honor.
    • The Medal of Honor is awarded for personal acts of valor above and beyond the call of duty, and is our Nation's highest military honor. The medal is presented by the President in the name of Congress, to US military personnel only. There are three versions of the medal, one for the Army, Navy, and Air Force. Service members of the Marine Corps and Coast Guard receive the Navy version of the medal. The Medal of Honor was created by Congress in 1861. Since its creation, there have been fewer than 3,500 Medals of Honor awarded to the nation's soldiers, sailors, airmen, marines, and coast guardsmen. The Medal of Honor is presented by the President at the White House in a formal ceremony expressing the gratitude of the American people. When awarded posthumously, presentations are made to the recipient's next of kin. In 1990, Congress designated March 25 of each year as "National Medal of Honor Day". In Georgia there have been 27 men honored for their valor by receiving the Medal of Honor. Of those, 13 are members of the Army, 10 are Marines, and there are 2 each from the Air Force and Navy.
