Bulldogs Advance To Quarterfinals At Regional Championships

ATHENS——Three members of the Georgia men's tennis team advanced to the singles quarterfinals of the USTA/ITA Southeast Regional Championships Saturday at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex. The Bulldogs will also have two doubles teams in the semifinals.
Top-seeded Austin Smith, the No. 2 seed Nathan Pasha and No. 9-16 seed Wayne Montgomery each won a pair of singles matches to advance. Smith defeated Georgia Southern's Ristomatti Lanne, 6-2, 6-4 and North Florida's Jack Findel-Hawkins, 6-1, 6-2. Pasha advanced with a 7-6(4), 6-4 victory over Florida's Chase Perez-Blanco and a 6-2, 6-2 win over teammate Peter Bertran. Montgomery downed Florida's Diego Hidalgo, 7-5, 6-1 and Georgia Tech's Carlos Benito, 6-4, 6-0.
Georgia will be represented by the teams of Eric Diaz/Smith and Montgomery/Pasha in the doubles semifinals. Diaz and Smith beat the nation's 10th-ranked pair and top seeds Benjamin Lock and Marco Nunez of Florida State, 8-4. They will face Montgomery and Pasha, who topped South Florida's Ignacio Gonzalez-Muniz and Vadym Kalyuzhnyy, 8-5. Oosterbaan and Wagland fell to the No. 2 seeded team of USF's Roberto Cid and Sasha Gozun, 8-6.
"I'm really proud of our guys," said head coach Manuel Diaz. "We have three guys in the quarterfinals, but I'm also proud of guys like Nick Wood and Ben Wagland, who lost close three-set matches. We are showing great progress. Our guys competed very well. To have three guys in the quarters and two teams in the quarters, our guys are playing hard and having a great deal of success. We hope it continues tomorrow."
Sunday's schedule begins with singles quarterfinals for main draw and consolation at 10 a.m., and winners will play at 2 p.m. Doubles matches will be played following singles.
