ATHENS, Ga. -- Following a successful showing at last weekend's Bulldog Tennis Classic, the University of Georgia women's tennis team will now make the short trip to Atlanta for the start of the 2014 USTA/ITA Southeast Regional Championships hosted by Georgia Tech at the Ken Byers Tennis Complex from Friday to Monday.

Schools from the states of Georgia and Florida compose the ITA's Southeast Region, and the individual singles and doubles winners from the main draws at the Southeast Regional Championships will earn automatic bids to the National Indoor Championships scheduled to take place in New York from Nov. 6-9.

Last fall, current Bulldog junior Silvia Garcia won the regional championships in singles with a 7-6(2), 6-1 victory over Alexandra Cercone of Florida. This year, the Bulldogs will have three doubles teams and seven individuals featuring in the tournament's main draws and one doubles team playing in the B draw.

Play is scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. on Friday with the main draw's round of 32 doubles matches.

The No. 10 ranked doubles pairing of senior Lauren Herring and Garcia was tagged as the No. 3 seed in the regional and will face Georgia Southern's Anne Kurzweil and Mary Phillips Smith. The freshman duo of Ellen Perez and Mariana Gould earned the No. 5 seed for the tournament and is matched-up against the Georgia Tech tandem of Johnnise Renaud and Natasha Prokhnevska. Sophomore Caroline Brinson and freshman Laura Patterson are unseeded and will face North Florida's Esther Zuniga and Quetzali Vazquez.

Following the conclusion of the round of 32 doubles matches, the winning teams will advance to the round of 16 matches that will begin shortly thereafter.

When the round of 16 main draw doubles matches are complete, the round of 16 doubles B draw will commence. Junior Mia King and freshman Hannah King will represent Georgia in the B draw as they square-off against Kennesaw State's Alexandra Mercado and Cristina Martin. If victorious, they will face Georgia State's Niriantsa Rasolomalala and Kristin Rehse in the quarterfinals on Saturday.

Friday's singles play will begin after the doubles matches have concluded and will feature seven Bulldogs in round of 64 action. The No. 6 ranked Herring is the No. 1 seed for the regional and will face-off with Laura Argente of South Florida in her first match. Defending champion Garcia, who is ranked No. 10 in singles, earned the No. 2 seed and will face Symone Townsend of Florida A&M. Elsewhere, Gould will play North Florida's Zuniga, Brinson will face Florida State's Emily Fanning, Hannah King will challenge Florida's Kourtney Keegan, Mia King will be matched-up with Florida State's Kerrie Cartwright, and Patterson will take on Miami's Lina Lileikite to complete the round of 64 singles matches for Georgia.

The winners of their first round matches will advance to play in the round of 32 on Saturday.

Ellen Perez is the only Georgia player who will not feature in singles play at the regional championships as she continues to limit the amount of matches she plays following offseason wrist surgery.

Updated brackets and results from the regional event can be found on the ITA's tournament hub page as the tournament progresses.
