Bulldogs Undefeated On First Day Of Regional Championships

ATHENS——The Georgia men's tennis team won all six of its matches on the first day of the USTA/ITA Southeast Regional Championships Thursday at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.
Senior Eric Diaz and freshman Peter Bertran each won a pair of singles matches to qualify for the main draw on Friday. Diaz defeated Florida Gulf Coast's Austin Bates 6-2, 6-7(4), 6-3 and Georgia Tech's Daniel Yun, 6-3, 6-4, while Bertran beat Norbert Nemcsek of North Florida, 6-3, 2-0, ret., and Georgia Tech's Carlos Benito, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2. They will join six other Bulldogs in the 64-player main draw on Friday.
In doubles, Bertran won his third match of the day as he teamed with Nick Wood to edge Georgia State's Felipe Jaworski and Jannis Koeke, 8-7(6), while Wayne Montgomery and Nathan Pasha advanced with an 8-4 victory over Mercer's Sam Philip and Ruben Vanoppen. Georgia will have three doubles teams in the round of 32 on Friday. Diaz and Austin Smith received a first round bye.
"It was a good start for us," said head coach Manuel Diaz. "Our guys played well and came through in the singles matches, and I was really proud of our doubles teams. Peter and Nick were down in the tiebreaker and really raised their game under pressure. We are looking forward to the getting back out here tomorrow.
Day two of the tournament begins Friday morning with second round doubles at 9 a.m. All three Georgia teams will be in action, and the winners will play again at 11 a.m. Singles matches are slated to begin at 2 p.m.
Admission to the tournament is free.
