October 12, 2014 | Women's Tennis
ATHENS, Ga. -- Georgia sophomore Caroline Brinson defeated Bulldog teammate Mariana Gould 6-3, 6-3 in the singles final of the Bulldog Tennis Classic on Sunday afternoon after each won her respective semifinal matchup earlier in the morning.
The No. 1 seeded Gould defeated Georgia Tech's Paige Hourigan 7-5, 7-5 in the semifinals to book her place in the tournament final as the freshman continued to perform well in her first-ever tournament at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex. She learned shortly after her victory that fellow teammate and No. 2 seed Brinson would be joining her in the championship matchup after the New Orleans, La., native ousted Wisconsin's Lauren Chypyha, 6-2, 6-7(7), 6-4 in the other semifinal showdown.
Brinson then came out on top in a hard-fought battle between two of the Bulldogs' emerging talents with a 6-3, 6-3 win in the final.
"I have never been put in that situation before [playing against a teammate]," said Brinson, "but the team and coaches talked to us before and said, 'Just go out there, all of the refs are calling the lines for you and you don't have to make any calls, so just play each other like you would in practice.' When it comes down to it you just have to go out there and play like it's any other person across the court."
In other action on Sunday, the Bulldogs maintained their perfect doubles record at the tournament with four more victories against Georgia Tech, Wisconsin, and Missouri opposition. Mia King and Hannah King partnered together again to defeat Mizzou tandem Clark and Lashway, 8-3. Lauren Herring and Gould teamed up to down Wisconsin's Chypyha and Avgerinos, 8-7(1), while Silvia Garcia and Ellen Perez defeated in-state rival Georgia Tech's pairing of Hourigan and Rasheeda McAdoo, 8-2. Brinson and Laura Patterson made quick-work of Lipscomb pair Kromer and Kent with an 8-0 sweep in the Bulldogs' other doubles matchup.
Freshman Ellen Perez and junior Silvia Garcia were crowned doubles champions after their impressive win over Georgia Tech on Sunday.
The Bulldogs were also perfect in consolation play on the final day after Hannah King (6-2, 6-0), Mia King (6-3, 7-6(2)), and Laura Patterson (6-3, 6-0) won matches against Wisconsin's Lauren Burich, East Carolina's Michelle Castro, and Wisconsin's Kelsey Grambeau, respectively. In total, the Georgia ladies were a combined 13-4 in singles and 12-0 in doubles over the weekend.
"I think it was a great weekend for all of our players," said head coach Jeff Wallace. "It's always great to get some competition in. We've got a lot of new players and we're working on a lot of things so it's an opportunity to get out there, see where we're at, learn more, and work on more things. I thought we played some pretty solid doubles all weekend and the singles was good as well. The thing I liked was that as the weekend progressed our players were getting better and better and that's always a good sign."
Georgia will now prepare for the ITA Southeast Regionals which will take place in Atlanta, Ga., from Oct. 17-20.
