Lady Bulldogs Knock Off Texas; Bulldogs Fall To Longhorns

AUSTIN, Texas --- The No. 4-ranked Georgia women's swimming and diving team earned an impressive road win on Saturday, dispatching No. 8 Texas at the Jamail Texas Swimming Center.

The Lady Bulldogs (8-0-1) posted a 157.5-142.5 victory over Texas (5-3). The No. 10 Georgia men (7-2) dropped a 169-126 decision to the No. 2 Longhorns (4-1).

Shannon Vreeland, Brittany MacLean, Melanie Margalis and Laura Ryan were double winners for the Lady Bulldogs on Saturday.

Vreeland won the 100 freestyle in 49.90 and the 200 freestyle in 1:47.94. MacLean reached the wall first in the 500 freestyle (4:47.31) and the 1,650 freestyle (16:23.61). Margalis claimed the 100 breaststroke in 1:00.81 and the 200 individual medley with a time of 1:57.67. Ryan swept the springboard diving, registering 319.58 points on 1-meter and 375.08 points on 3-meter.

The Lady Bulldogs also got a win in the 200 butterfly from Hali Flickinger (2:00.02) and in the 200 breaststroke from Annie Zhu (2:13.31).

For the Bulldogs, Ty Stewart posted a pair of victories. He went 1:46.15 in the 200 backstroke and 1:48.35 in the 200 individual medley.

Andrew Gemmell won the 1,650 freestyle in 15:22.01 and Taylor Dale claimed the 100 backstroke in 48.34.

The 200 medley relay of Dale, Nicolas Fink, Pace Clark and Michael Trice stopped the clock with a first-place time of 1:28.79.

"I thought our teams kept a positive attitude, raced hard and did what every coach would hope a team would do this late in the season," said Harvey Humphries, Georgia's Senior Associate Head Coach. "We have so much respect for the Texas program, and we feel like they're the kind of teams you measure your teams against. Overall, it was a great meet. Both teams really turned in some great performances."

Georgia's teams will be idle until Jan. 25 when they entertain Tennessee.
