ATHENS, Ga. --- Georgia senior Emilie Burger wrapped up her stellar collegiate career with a 3-over 75 in the final round of the NCAA Championships at the University of Georgia Golf Course on Friday. She finished the 72-hole tournament at 14-over 302 and tied for 58th.
For the third consecutive day, Burger teed off at No. 10 and played the back half of the layout first. She turned at 1-over after posting bogeys at No. 11 and No. 13 but regaining a stroke with a birdie at No. 17.
A double-bogey at No. 1, her 10th hole of the day, pushed her to 3-over. Following a bogey at No. 4, she was able to birdie No. 7 to finish at 3-over 75, her third 75 of the 72-hole event.
"I (teared up) on the last hole," Burger admitted. "It's been crazy, it's been fun, and I've enjoyed every minute of it. It wasn't my best round of golf or best week of golf, but that's how it goes sometimes. My goal has been to be here at the national championships one day, and I did it. I'm just happy to be here."
Burger's course knowledge served her well when she stepped in as a guest analyst for the NCAA's webcast of the final two rounds.
"The broadcast thing, that was awesome," Burger said. "They said maybe I could do it again, I want to sneak up there. It's been a fun week."
Burger was 89th after two rounds, but she ascended 31 positions during the final two days.
The tournament also concluded the first-year tenure of Georgia coach Josh Brewer.
"It was a great first season…I should say 'good,' I'm not going to say great," Brewer said "I'm happy for Emilie to end her collegiate career here in front of friends and family. It was nice to see a lot of people out here. It also tells us what work we have to do.
"To get to this level; to make sure we're playing late on Friday afternoon next year during the NCAA Championship, and that work actually will start tomorrow morning, or maybe tonight if I can't sleep," Brewer continued. "We played three freshman most of the year. We had two sophomores who played a lot for us so they're going to have to step up and continue to contribute. We have a class of three coming in our freshman class. Expect one or two of them, if not all three, to push the people here. Again, we had a lot of good experiences this year and came close to beating some schools and, again, we just have to get better and we'll get to work as soon as tomorrow's sun comes up."
Brewer's former team, Southern Cal completed its wire-to-wire victory in record-setting fashion. The Women of Troy finished at 19-under, shattering the previous NCAA Championships team score record of 4-under.
"Josh was a big part of this," said USC coach Andrea Gaston. "He actually predicted that this would be our week. He knows this course and he knows our team. If it's permissible I'm going to make sure he receives a ring from us because he certainly deserves one."
