Georgia Golfers Climb To 7th At LSU

BATON ROUGE, La. --- The No. 18 Georgia women's golf team fired a 5-over 293 in Saturday's second round of the LSU Golf Classic, the low round of the day in the 14-team field. The Bulldogs climbed from 10th to seventh on the team leaderboard in the process.
Georgia's score Saturday was 22 strokes better than Friday's opening round.
"We made an adjustment today and it paid off," head coach Josh Brewer said. "We usually play very aggressive. After yesterday, we talked about it and decided to be a little more conservative on our approach shots today. That led to more birdie chances, a heckuva a lot more pars and very few big numbers. I'm proud of the way they accepted and executed that adjustment."
The Bulldogs' day could have been among the best in school history. Freshman Kailey Walsh, who is competing as an individual and not among Georgia's playing five, carded a 5-under 67. With Walsh in the lineup, UGA's Saturday score would have been a 5-under 283.
"Kailey had a special round today," Brewer said. "To make seven birdies on this golf course is amazing. After talking to her, I think she had even a few more birdie chances. I know she's competing as an individual but this was a great round for our team. It shows her teammates what's she's capable of. If someone is having a bad round, Kailey is more than capable of picking them up. I'm proud of her from that perspective."
Walsh teed off from No. 15 and opened with back-to-back birdies before a bogey at No. 17. Walsh played the front side at 3-under, with birdies at No. 3, No. 5, No. 6 and No. 9 and a bogey at No. 7. She finished her day with a birdie at No. 17.
Emilie Burger paced the Bulldogs' lineup on Saturday with a 1-under 71. Manuela Carbajo Ré chipped in an even-par 72, Amira Alexander shot 73 and Abby Johnson posted a 77 to round out Georgia's scoring rounds. Rocio Sanchez Lobato carded a 79.
Burger's steady loop include just four non-pars. She teed off from No. 12 and rgistered birdies at No. 14 and No. 17. A double-bogey at No. 4 brought Burger back to par before a birdie at No. 6 pushed her back into red numbers on the day.
Overall, Walsh is among four golfers tied for fifth, but she is just one stroke back of a quartet of co-leaders. Through 36 holes, Burger is tied for 16th at 149, Carbajo Ré is tied for 19th at 150, Sanchez Lobato is tied for 38th at 155, Alexander is tied for 44th at 157 and Johnson is tied for 55th at 160.
No. 8 Arkansas leads the team field at 590, 10 shots better than both No. 25 Tulane and LSU. Rounding out the top-10 teams are Tennessee at 602, No. 20 N.C. State at 603, TCU at 604, the Bulldogs and Florida State at 608, Kentucky at 615 and Ole Miss at 618.
Sunday's final round will begin with an 8:30 CT shotgun start, with the Bulldogs paired with Florida State and Kentucky. Live scoring is available at www.golfstat.com.
