ATHENS, Ga.--The No. 5 Georgia women's tennis team continued conference play with a 5-2 win over No. 16 Vanderbilt on a frigid Friday evening at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.
Georgia (12-2, 5-1) won the doubles point, and then picked up four singles wins in route to its seventh win in its last eight matches.
"Today was a great match," said head coach Jeff Wallace. "Vanderbilt played really well. Doubles was very exciting for us. Our number one team was undefeated coming into the day and [Vanderbilt] knocked them off. They really played a great match. Then, our number two team played the best match of the season with an 8-1 win and then our number three team really pulled up big for us to get the doubles point. It took a great effort for us in singles, but this was a really good 5-2 win."
Georgia's Lauren Herring and Maho Kowase picked up a commanding 8-1 win over Vanderbilt's Ashleigh Antal and Marie Casares at No. 2. The win is the pair's fourth win in a row. Georgia won the doubles point when Lilly Kimbell and Mia King upended Vanderbilt's Georgina Sellyn and Frances Altick 8-4 at No. 3. Georgia's Kate Fuller and Silvia Garcia, ranked third in the country, fell 8-6 to No. 29 Lauren Mira and Courtney Colton. The loss is the pair's first of the spring.
In singles, No. 120 Fuller gave Georgia a 2-0 lead with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Antal. Fuller won six straight games in the second set to pick up the win. Next, No. 17 Kowase beat Vanderbilt's Casares 6-1, 7-5. She improves to 28-7 this season. Herring, the seventh-ranked player in the country, clinched the Georgia win with a 6-4, 5-2 win over No. 46 Antal. Herring trailed 4-1 in the first set, before winning five straight games.
With the match outcome already decided, Vanderbilt avoided the shutout when Altick topped Makenzie Craft, 6-3, 7-6 (7-3). Garcia put Georgia up 5-1 with a come from behind, three-set, 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 win over Colton. Vanderbilt won the final match of the day as Sellyn outlasted King, 5-7, 7-6 (7-5), 1-0 (10-5).
Georgia improves to 29-8 all-time versus the Commodores
Georgia returns to action on Sunday to take on No. 46 Kentucky. The match is slated to start at 1:00 p.m. and admission is free.
