Final Stats

ATHENS, Ga. -- Georgia sophomore Silvia Garcia won the ITA Southeast Regional singles championship Monday afternoon at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex, earning an automatic bid to the National Indoor Championships in New York on Nov. 7-10.

No. 60 Garcia bested No. 38 Alexandra Cercone of Florida 7-6(2), 6-1 for the title. The Madrid, Spain native improves to 11-1 this spring. This weekend, she won all of her matches in just two sets and was 4-0 in set tiebreakers.

"I am so happy and so proud of myself," Garcia said. "I had some really tough matches. I think my attitude was really good. I just tried to do my best and stay calm. I'm really excited to play up at National Indoors"

Earlier in the day, the No. 50 tandem of Lauren Herring and Maho Kowase fell short to Georgia Tech's No. 26 duo of Kendal Woodard and Megan Kurey, 8-2. The Georgia duo went 4-1 in doubles through the weekend, improving to 9-2 on the year.

"It's a really big weekend for us," said head coach Jeff Wallace. "To be the only school here with players in both the singles and doubles final was special. I can't say enough about how Silvia played this weekend. It's so exciting to see her get the wins that she got and get that trip to New York. I thought it was a great week for all of our players and we learned a lot about things we need to work on. It was high-level tennis all the way around all weekend."

After taking this weekend off, Georgia will return to action November 1-3 in Charleston, S.C.
