Georgia Postgame Notes: #7 Georgia vs. Florida Atlantic - Sept. 15, 2012
School Records Set: Georgia beat FAU 56-20, marking the first time in school history that Georgia has scored 40-plus in each of its first three games. Georgia has outscored its opponents 142-63 points. Georgia is 31-1 in non-conference games at home under Mark Richt and 46-8 overall in non-conference games.
Tonight, the Bulldogs piled up a school record 713 yards of total offense. The previous high was 667 versus Southern Miss in 1993. This ranks No. 6 in SEC history and is the most since Arkansas matched that against North Texas in 2007,
Two 100-Yard Rushers: True freshmen Keith Marshall and Todd Gurley both finished the game with more than 100 yards rushing. Marshall had 10 carries for 104 yards and a touchdown marking his first career 100-yard game. Gurley registered his second 100-yard game after picking up 111 yards on 10 carries and a score. Georgia last accomplished the feat versus Auburn in 2011. Danny Ware (24-127-0) and Thomas Brown (17-122-1) were the last true freshmen to go over 100 yards in the same game (Vanderbilt, 2004).
Career Night For Murray: Junior QB Aaron Murray posted a career-high 342 passing yards, completing 14 of 19 passes with 2 TDs and 1 INT. Also, he rushed for 2 TDs. Murray now is tied for second all-time in school history for TD passes, tallying 67 (Eric Zeier). The Georgia mark is 72 by David Greene.
Herrera To The House: Sophomore ILB Amarlo Herrera turned his first career interception into a 35-yard return for a touchdown. This was the Bulldogs' first INT returned for a TD since Bacarri Rambo did it versus Auburn in 2011.
Reaching The Century Mark: Murray connected with sophomore SE Michael Bennett for a 67-yard touchdown to put the Bulldogs up 28-14. This was Bennett's career-long reception. Bennett finished with four catches for 110 yards and a score, giving him his first 100-yard game.
First Time In The Zone: Murray connected with junior TE Arthur Lynch for a 36-yard touchdown early in the third period. This was Lynch's first career touchdown.
Points off Turnovers: Junior OLB Chase Vasser forced a fumble and sophomore CB Malcolm Mitchell recovered it in the first quarter. Murray later scored. Late in the same period, Lynch caught an 18-yard pass before fumbling. The Owls scored a touchdown a minute later on a 43-yard run. This marked FAU's first points in the opening half this year. Late in the third quarter, Murray threw a pick in the end zone. FAU threw an INT of its own on the next play that sophomore ILB Amarlo Herrera returned 35 yards for a touchdown. LeMay threw his first career INT that the Owls returned for a touchdown. Georgia has forced five turnovers for 28 points and surrendered five turnovers that opponents turned into 16 points.
Blocked Extra Point: Junior Kwame Geathers blocked the first extra point for the Bulldogs since Shawn Williams had one against Tennessee in 2011.
Tackles: Senior S Shawn Williams led the team with a career-high 12 tackles and while senior ILB Michael Gilliard had nine stops.
New Starters Tonight: True freshman OLB Jordan Jenkins started his first career game against the Owls. Counting PK Marshall Morgan, the Bulldogs have had eight first-time starters this season, including four true freshmen. Also of note, senior Sanders Commings returned to the lineup as one of the starting safeties after missing the first 2 games. Junior FLK Rantavious Wooten also started his first game since 2009 and 4th overall.
Injuries: Junior OG Dallas Lee suffered a left ankle injury in the second quarter and did not return. Wooten had a left knee contusion and left the game. All-American OLB Jarvis Jones did not see any action after playing with a groin injury in the win at Missouri.
Uga IX: "Russ," a former interim mascot for the Bulldogs, received a "battlefield promotion" and assumed the title of "Uga IX" in a pregame ceremony at midfield.
Bulldog Game Captains: Senior N John Jenkins, senior SE Marlon Brown, senior TB Richard Samuel and junior OLB Jarvis Jones served as Georgia's captains.
Up Next: The Bulldogs (3-0, 1-0 SEC) host Vanderbilt (1-2, 0-1 SEC) on Sept. 22. The game will be televised by ESPN2 at 7:45 p.m.
