Georgia Student-Athletes Continue Academic Excellence

ATHENS, Ga. -The University of Georgia women's gymnastics squad earned the highest cumulative grade point average (GPA) for a UGA sports team for the second semester in a row. The 17 Gym Dogs earned an overall 3.52 GPA - a program record - for the spring semester of 2012, improving upon their 3.38 GPA for the fall semester of 2011.
As a whole, the 533 student athletes enrolled at the University of Georgia earned a cumulative GPA of 3.05 for the spring semester of 2012. Of the 533 student athletes, 17 received a 4.00 GPA, 133 earned a GPA over 3.50. A total of 296 (201 on scholarship, 95 non-scholarship) student -athletes earned a total GPA over 3.00 for the semester which is 55.5% of the student-athlete population at Georgia.
In second and third place in terms of cumulative GPA rankings were the men's and women's cross country teams respectively. The 14 members of the men's cross country team earned a 3.39 GPA in the spring, while the 34 members of the women's cross country team earned a 3.38 cumulative GPA.
The women's swimmers and divers earned a cumulative GPA of 3.34 among the 28 students, which improved upon their 3.14 of the fall semester. The men's swimmers and divers also improved upon their cumulative GPA for the fall, as the 26 students earned a cumulative 3.20 for the spring.
The men's tennis team earned the second highest cumulative GPA for men's sports, with a 3.33 for the spring of 2012 among the 12 members. The eight members of the women's tennis team finished with a 2.99 cumulative GPA for the semester.
Both the women's track and field team, and the equestrian team earned over a 3.30 GPA for the spring semester, finishing with a 3.307 and a 3.304 respectively. Both teams have over 60 members, with 66 belonging to track and field, and 65 belonging to equestrian. The men's track and field team finished with a cumulative 2.75 GPA among their 54 student-athletes.
The ten students on the women's golf team earned a cumulative 3.06 GPA for the spring, improving upon their 2.90 of the fall, while the women's soccer team also earned over a 3.00 for the spring semester, finishing with a 3.01 for the 27 members. The men's baseball team was the final team to earn over a 3.00 for this semester, earning a cumulative 3.04 GPA between the 41 students. The men's golf team just missed the 3.00 mark with a 2.98 GPA among 11 student-athletes, and the women's softball squad earned a 2.75 for the 16 members of the team.
The women's volleyball squad earned a cumulative 2.93 from their 16 members for the spring of 2012. The 111 total student-athletes on the football team finished the spring with a 2.80 cumulative GPA.
The women's basketball team earned a 2.90 GPA for the spring, greatly improving upon their 2.57 GPA for the fall of 2011 from the 12 students on the team. The 13 members of the men's basketball team earned a 2.65 cumulative GPA for the spring semester of 2012.
