FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. --- A late-day slide prevented the No. 9-ranked Georgia women's golf team from making a move at the SEC Championships during Saturday's second round at the Blessings Golf Club. The Bulldogs gave away eight strokes on the final two holes and slipped from third to fifth on the team leaderboard. Still, Georgia enters Sunday's final round 11 shots off the lead, the same margin as it entered the second round.
Freshman Rocio Sanchez Lobato led the Bulldogs with a 1-over 73 on Saturday. Georgia also counted a 75 from Emilie Burger, a 76 from Milena Savich and an 82, the score posted by both Amelia Hill and Marta Silva Zamora.
"We struggled a little coming in," head coach Kelley Hester said. "I felt like Emilie and Rocio and Milena all played this golf course the way I know they're capable of. I know we let a few shots go at the end but overall I was really pleased with our effort. We'd like to be a little closer than 11 shots, but with this golf course, that's certainly not insurmountable. We'll go out tomorrow and play our game and see where that gets us."
Sanchez Lobato mixed five bogeys with four birdies en route to her 1-over loop. She birdied No. 1 but gave that stroke and another back with bogeys at No. 3 and No. 4. Sanchez Lobato returned to even with a birdie at No. 8 before turning at 1-over following a bogey at No. 9. She played the back side at even-par by recording five pars, birdies at No. 10 and No. 15 and bogeys at No. 13 and No. 16.
"I bogeyed all of the par-5s today," Sanchez Lobato said. "I messed up off the tee boxes and hit is everywhere and then I couldn't fix it. That was sad. Every time I made a birdie, it seemed like a made a bogey on a par-5."
No. 5 Auburn shot 297 to climb to the top of the team leaderboard. The Tigers are at 603, a shot better Arkansas. No. 2 Alabama is third at 609, followed by No. 15 Florida at 612, the Bulldogs at 614, No. 7 LSU at 619, No. 24 South Carolina, Kentucky and Ole Miss all at 624, No. 10 Vanderbilt at 625, No. 13 Tennessee at 629 and Mississippi State at 641.
Auburn's Patricia Sanz signed for a 73 and retained the individual lead. She is at 2-under 142, a shot better than Vanderbilt's Marina Alex. For Georgia, Burger and Silva Zamora are tied for 10th at 151, Sanchez Lobato is tied for 17th at 151, Savich is tied for 37th at 159 and Hill is 59th at 171.
The Bulldogs will be paired with Florida and LSU for Sunday's final round, teeing off from 8:00-8:40 am CT from No. 1. Live scoring acan be found at www.georgiadogs.com.
