Ask The Gym Dogs: September 27

Fans have the opportunity to ask questions to either a Georgia gymnastics coach or a student-athlete. Here is the latest installment of "Ask The Gym Dogs." To ask a question for, click here.

Jim from Athens, Ga.: When I was in college, the most serious athletes did a lot of basic conditioning during the off-season. When the competitive season was over, they might take a break for (say) three weeks; but then they were back in the weight room and at the track, building the strength and stamina needed to avoid injuries and provide a foundation for the next competitive season. Today their public statements, at least, seem to stress "enjoying the college experience" and other euphemisms for not doing serious conditioning work. Is the PR (blogs and the like) misleading, or has the "gymnastics subculture" changed to emphasize "fun" more than building the foundations of success?

Head Coach Jay Clark: Thanks for the question Jim. I assure you that nothing has changed in terms of what is expected of our student-athletes. We require all of what is allowable within the NCAA regulations. Our gymnasts take very seriously their commitment to this program, and are known all over campus as some of the most hard-working and committed athletes on this campus. However, in a sport like ours we have always believed in the rest component during the off season, and allowing them certain opportunities that are not afforded them during the school year. Of course internet blog or media pieces during the offseason tend to focus on just that, the offseason. Reading about an offseason workout in the weight room does not make for a good human interest piece. This, however, is not an indicator of all that goes on during the summer. Our team is well aware of the expectation to return fit and ready to start another climb. This is not new. Thanks for your question, we certainly hope to see you at our home meets this year.

Sarah from Burlington, Vt.: Do the girls get to keep their competition leos and workout gear?

Assistant Coach Julie Clark: Thanks for the question Sarah. Actually the girls are only allowed to keep the gear they workout in everyday or use for workouts. The competition leotards may be purchased at the end of their careers if they decide they want to keep them.
