ATHENS-----The Georgia gymnastics team held its first mandatory practice of the fall Monday afternoon in preparation for the 2012 season.
The Gym Dogs return 12 gymnasts from a year ago including defending NCAA bars champion Kat Ding, junior All-America Noel Couch and sophomore All-America Lindsey Cheek.
"It's good to be back in the gym and have some structure," said third-year head coach Jay Clark. "It was a good starting point. You really only have about 40 good training days in the period between now and January, and this was a good starting point for us. We hope to get to about 10 or 11 people on every event, and it looks like we'll have a little more depth and some more flexibility this year. It's exciting to get going again. It was a good start, and we're about where we wanted to be."
The Gym Dogs have added three newcomers to the team this fall including Chelsea Davis from Austin, Texas, Camile Pfister of Kennesaw, Ga., and Sarah Persinger of Mount Holly, N.C.
Georgia will hold its practices on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday afternoons most weeks, and the workouts are open to the public. The Gym Dogs open the season at home against Denver on Jan. 6.
