WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. --- Former Georgia men’s tennis standout John Isner won his third career ATP World Tour event and second this summer, defeating Julien Benneteau 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in Saturdays’s finals of the inaugural Winston-Salem Open just 30 miles from Isner’s hometown of Greensboro, N.C.
After dropping the first set to Benneateau – who reached the singles main draw out of the qualifier – Isner responded to take the next two for the win. Ranked No. 28 in the world, Isner entered the tournament seeded fourth and advanced to today’s match with yesterday’s 7-6(7), 6-4 decision over top-seeded Andy Roddick in the semifinals.
The win marks Isner’s third career win on the tour and came just a month after he won the Hall of Fame Championships in Newport, R.I., back on July 10. He also reached the finals in Atlanta and the semifinals in Washington this summer.
Isner will head to the US Open next week in Flushing Meadows, N.Y.
Isner was a four-time All-American at UGA from 2004-07 and led the men’s tennis team to the 2007 NCAA title. He holds the school record for wins in both singles and doubles, going 143-28 and 140-25, respectively while in Athens.
