STANFORD, CALIF.----Georgia's Chelsey Gullickson and Kate Fuller's tournament run in the NCAA Championships came to an end Saturday in the quarterfinals.
Gullickson, the defending NCAA singles champion, fell for the first time in her career to California's top-ranked and top seed Jana Juricova 6-3,6-0. Last year, Gullickson defeated Juricova to win the singles title in Athens, Ga. Then, they met again during this year's team tournament here with Gullickson posting another victory in Georgia's win over the Golden Bears. It snapped a 20-match winning streak for Juricova. However on Saturday, she moved in to the semifinals and ran her record to 33-4. Gullickson, who is ranked No. 25, ends the year 17-7.
In the doubles quarterfinals, the ninth-ranked team of Gullickson and Fuller were edged by Stanford's fourth seeded team of Hilary Barte and Mallory Burdette 6-3, 7-6(4). The Bulldog duo finished the season with a 17-6 mark in their first season as a tandem and earned All-America honors.
They helped the eighth-ranked team go 19-5 and reach the NCAA quarterfinals too. Georgia made its 25th straight NCAA appearance this year, all under head coach Jeff Wallace.
